Last week we were up in Mt. Vernon. I spent a lovely day with my mom and one of my aunts. We visited with my great aunt, shopped some of our favorite stores, and then went to lunch.
After a little bit of debate about eating at Royal Fork, we decided to give it another chance. They raised their prices in the last year, changed the beverage policy, and the food wasn't great last time we ate there, so it's not a great value anymore. But we thought, maybe they were having a bad cook day last time we were there.
We all filled our plate and when I tasted my food, it was bitter. I had squash. It's sliced thin and fried with onioins. Yum... NO! It was bitter. Mom and Auntie had a bite of theirs... yum. But something on Aunties plate was bitter. Then something on mom's plate was bitter. Then my Auntie and Mom discovered part of their squash was bitter. We wonder if they had something they were seasoning the food with that makes it so bitter. Nasty, scrunch your face like a baby sucking on a dill pickle bitter.
Some of my food (fish) was dry from over cooking. One of my favorite salads with peas was just nasty, and the cantaloupe and Okra were also bitter. The food was not good. Okay, the potatoes and gravy was good.
Because my aunt had a beverage, and mom and I went with water, the hostess and a another staff member watchd us closely to be sure we didn't take a soda or coffee. It made us all very uncomfortable. It was extremely unusual how they watched us.
We had finished eating our lunch, and we all had dessert. I went up to get Auntie a cup of coffee. Another customer was getting a beverage too. First of all they were out of coffee! No doubt that was a good thing... considering, I saw a cockroach scurrying around the coffee mugs!! Ewwwwwww!!! The other customer saw it too. We were both pointng and quietly eeewwwwwing at the same time.
The hostess had a dish towel and when a little cockroach came out of hiding, she squashed it, like it was an everyday occurance. YUK.
There will be no more debating about whether we should have lunch at Royal Fork...
