The Call You Don't Want To Receive

This afternoon my mom called to let me know my uncle had gone into a coma. He's been ill for awhile now, but we didn't know he was this ill. I was ready to go when hubby walked in the door. When we got to the hospital his room and the waiting room was over flowing with family. I have mentioned I'm from a gigantic size family, right?

He has made his wishes known he doesn't want any medical treatment. Well, it isnt on paper. So the DR. kept questioning my cousin about his dad's wishes. (It is so important to have the forms filled out and signed when you are healthy.... don't put it off.)

Uncle is resting comfortably. They gave him a dose of sugar and hooked up an IV so he's not dehydrated. The Dr assured us Uncle probably wouldn't make it through the night, but they were making him as comfortable as possible.

Everyone was set to spend the night at the hospital. I'm sure the nurses were wondering what sort of crazy family we are. But we didn't want my cousin or my aunt to be alone.

Then my uncle's daughter came into the hospital. Her relationship with her family has been cut off for the past couple years. Aunt and Uncle have been so torn up by the whole mess. Well, when she walked into the room she hugged her mom. Not much was said, just hugging.... then she turned and leaned over her daddy.... she said very quietly, "I'm here"

The most amazing thing happened. Her daddy opened his eyes.... they talked quietly and she hugged him.

At this point there wasn't one dry eye in the entire room and the waiting room. We were all crying.

I'm glad Uncle is resting peacefully tonight. Most of the family went home. We'll be back tomorrow. I took my aunt home and got her settled in for the night. She wanted to be alone. I am not sure it was the best thing I could do for her, but it is what she wanted.

Aunt and Uncle just celebrated 52 years of marriage.

And an update on Susan... I have no idea how she is doing. My cell phone was off because of the hospital rules. I'm hoping no news is good news.
