I watched the news last night and they were making a big deal over the thunder storms in the area. Having spent some time in the midwest, with some huge thunder & lightening storms and tornado watches, I thought oh good grief, we have such dramatic news reporters.
When I went to bed it was thundering and there were a few flashes of lightening. I wanted to see the storm, so we had the window coverings completely open. It was beautiful. I have learned to sleep right through most thunder storms. We are in the greater Seattle area... storms like this are no big deal here. So I went to sleep almost immediately. Well, sometime in the middle of the night I woke up and lightening was lighting up the entire yard and the thunder was crashing and shaking the house. The storm hovered right over our house for around 45 minutes.
It reminded me of the trip we took to the midwest when Chris graduated. Hubby and I travelled with our homeschool kids. Our public school kids were still in school, so my mom stayed home with them. They all flew out for the weekend. The day they arrived in town, there were warnings on the tv about possible strong thunder storms with the possibility of tornados. We went to bed and all was calm. In the middle of the night It was thundering pretty good... even shaking the house. I got up and went to the bathroom, washed my hands, and turned off the light... only the lights weren't turned on.
Okay... this is when I got scared. The house was lit up from the lightening. It wasn't even going dim, even though it was like 2:00am. At this point, all my children were awake... with one exception. Andrea. That girl slept right through the entire storm! I was sitting on the sofa and I had 5 boys piled on top of me. Yeah. Brave little men they were. Hubby? He was sleeping. Our hosts... sleeping. Turns out a small tornado touched down near us. It did minor damage. I took a few photos around town later in the morning. That afternoon, town was cleaned up and that night graduation went on as if nothing had happened.
On that trip, I didn't get much sleep, because it stormed nearly every night. I have since learned to sleep through the storms... for the most part. LOL
It turns out, our storm here was a bigger deal than our usual storms. Our power was off for a little while. The lightening and thunder continued throughout most of the morning, along with some hail and heavy rains. It was somewhat comforting to sit here enjoying a stormy morning.

Wow! That sounds neat. I always say that I enjoy storms, but I try to include at the same time that perhaps my views would change if I was in a terrifically big one, or a tornado, or some such. Anyway, at least everybody was safe. Wasn't it because of a storm that that big tree branch almost fell on one of your sons? I can't remember exactly.
I have always enjoyed our thunder storms here in Washington. After all, our thunder storms don't usually lead to too much damage, like the thunder storms in the midwest. You know what I mean... since you live here too. I guess there is an occasional news story about something getting hit by lightening.
I think this is the post about the branch limb falling on our house: http://lilbitgabby.com/lilbits/2007/07/26/little-reminders/ but I don't think it was because of a storm.
Thunder storms are one thing around here... now wind storms are another story. I really don't like the wind storms around my house. LOL I'm a big baby in a wind storm.
